The safe answer is, those peoples from Asia who came to the Americas about 13,500 years ago across the Bering Strait. This has been the conventional wisdom for many years. Now there is evidence that this may not be so. That is, it is now appearing that Europeans may have arrived in the Americas some 18,000 years ago. (re: Michael Waters, director of the Center for the Study of the First Americans at Texas A&M University and co-author of a new study, which appears in the February 2007 issue of the journal Science.)

There is also some researchers who believe (report presented May 24, 2007 at the American Geophysical Union's meeting in Acapulco, Mexico) that the original people (Clovis hunters) of the Americas were eliminated via a comet about 13,000 years ago.

It may be that the first Americans were the Norse.

Native Americans/"Indians" are the first known people, but they arrived long before the 13,000 number others have tossed around (18,000 at a minimum, possibly 40,000 or more).

There is some evidence of people before those generally defined as Indians, people of Polynesian ethnicity who were here since 40,000 or before, but there is question whether these people were replaced by Indians or interbred with them.
