According to my Evolution professor the chicken came first. This is because birds evolved from other animals which evolved from a common ancestor. Animals evolve by process of birth. For instance, humans are slowly evolving to not have their little toe. This can only be seen slowly through offspring. Basically, a non-chicken gave birth to a chicken egg.

The egg came first. In evolution before there were any chickens something gave birth to the first chicken. Since that first birth had to be the precursor to a chicken it had to be an egg. What gave birth to that first chicken egg was not a chicken.

It entirely depends on your beliefs. If you believe that God created the animals, then it stands to reason he would first need a rooster to fertilize the eggs and a chicken to sit on the eggs. Evolution...still the chicken because something would be needed to lay the eggs and protect them from other animals, and most likely the chicken evolved from somthing else that didn't necessarily lay eggs. For me, it would be the egg because it's the first thing I ate this morning, and I'm grateful for both the egg and the chicken.

Once you add the word truly, that becomes a stupid question. Being that fish and reptiles existed long before birds, and they are born from eggs, the answer is clearly the egg.
