Well, first of all I don't think that you should give that much responsibility (or power) to only one person. Even when married, a person needs more friends for support than just that one life partner otherwise the marriage relationship can wear itself out with the stress of being everything for your partner or expecting your partner to be everything for you.

As far as qualities to look for in a best friend, I would look for the qualities that make a good person: Honesty, reliability, consideration. Of course, that means that you have to be that same kind of person right back. Not everyone is going to be interesting or exciting or available all the time. That is why you need more than one. Also so you don't wear each other out.

It is not important to find someone who is exactly like you or who likes everything you like. Where's the fun in that? You could just stay home alone. And that would not be a bad thing either. First be your own "best friend".

Jess Lair describes these people as "intimate friends we can trust, whom we care about and who care about us. these are the people whose faces light up when they see us and who like us the way we are." People who have been my close friends in my life still keep in touch with me and I with them even though we might live so far apart now that we can't visit in person all that often. But when we do get together again, it is like we were never apart.

They'd be the same qualities any responsible self needs to have.
Realism; honesty; equal concern for others.
Apart from these, I would like freedom from additive or compulsive behaviors, love f justice and a strong sense of the really beautiful--so we'd have something to talk about.

Someone who you can trust with your deepest secret..someone who is loyal and honest and will always lend a shoulder to cry on. They need to be a good listener and offer advice when needed, and not judge you for a difference in opinion.
