i have an old car that i have on my property that has been there for 4 months. I had told the owner that he could leave it here as long as he works on it & gets it up & running. He has not been by & has not called. It is still sitting in the same place as before. Is there any kind of abandoment law that exist so that i can sell it?

Every state has procedures for dealing with abandoned property, involving notification to the owner & certain time periods. If you follow those you'll avoid liability for illegally converting his property.

You probably can't sell it since you are not the legal owner. You may be able to contact the city and ask them if there is a program to help you, but chances are that you will have to contact a wrecking yard and ask them about coming and hauling it away. You will probably end up paying for it.

I don't know if you can sell it without proof of ownership. You could inform the owner he needs to remove the vehicle our you will have a scrap yard take it away. I believe most scap yards will tow away the vehicle for free as long as they can keep the vehicle.

There are a number of charities that will accept your old car as a donation (which gives you a tax deduction). I think the American Red Cross has such a program.

1st write a "certified" letter to the owner telling s/he that they have 30 days to remove it or you will take legal possession. After the 30 days I believe you take full ownership and can dispose of it any way you want.. Check with your state DMV 1st but I believe thats the way you have to do it.

If the car is still registered in his name it would be considered theft. If the car is unregistered you can call a metal recycling company. They will pay you for it.
