Ok, I look at this election a lot like the election of 1968. The political situation is similar. We are involved in an unpopular war, Iraq, in 1968 we were in Vietnam. The incumbent President, GW Bush, has become much less popular because of it and his party has suffered. Much like Johnson in 1968, where Democrats suffered popularity because of him and Johnson was forced to drop out of the election. Americans are giving the opposition party another look. In 1968, the Republican leading candidate was Richard Nixon, the former Vice President under President Eisenhower who lost the election to Kennedy in 1960. Although he was more divisive and less likable than other GOP candidates, like Reagan, George Romney, or Nelson Rockefeller, he was a figure from what was considered a more peaceful time in the past, the Eisenhower administration, and perhaps the people trusted him, more than someone new, to fix things back to the way they were.
Likewise, Sen. Clinton is a figure from what is considered a more peaceful time, the Clinton administration, and perhaps, although considered less likeable than her opponents Sen. Obama and Sen. Edwards, they trust her to bring things back to the way they were.
