depends greatly on how you ride and in what conditions. i've gotten as little as 30 mpg at 80 mph into a stiff headwind and a weeks worth of gear bungeed to the bike. i've also gotten a one time best of 58 mpg at 65-70 mph with a tailwind and not much baggage.

i have a 05 1200, all stock. in city, i'll average on the plus at 42-44 mpg if i dont do jack rabbit starts. highway i'll average as high as 57 mpg with the plus, and this is averaging 55-65 mph; and no, i dont baby the scoot on the interstate either.

The other answers have pretty much hit it, I just wanted to add in that most mods aren't detrimental to fuel economy... air cleaner and exhaust mods are most common, and all they do is improve the engine's breathing, which ups power, but also IMPROVES economy
