I am remodeling and making the a Florida room part of the main house. I was ripping off the dry wall that was on the ceiling, and noticed this small little guy sleeping on one of the rafters. I couldn't believe he didn't move as I had just put a sledge hammer through the dry wall not a foot from were he was. I grabbed him with my work gloves and put him in an old fish tank we had and covered it with a towel. I put some old rags in there and he went right back to sleep.

Will he be ok in there until spring? I can't put him outside because it is like 20 degrees and they can't live in the cold. He can't get out of the tank I've got it sealed shut, but does he need anything or will he just sleep until it gets warmer outside?
I have a bat house outside, but I checked and there aren't any inside it right now, (It's to cold) I love having them around they really reduce the mosquitoes.

bats are protected by law. so, by keeping him, you could technically be breaking the law. i am with you though--i love bats and love having them around, so i understand why you don't want to put him outside.

search for sanctuaries nearby you (i placed a link just below). they will take him in. or you could at least call them to find out if they can make any recommendations.

keep in mind that if you do keep him, you'll need to address food issues and learn about bat winter hibernation. if you can make comfortable accomodations for him, maybe he can "winter vacation" with you until spring!

good luck to both you and your little fellow!

Call your local zoo and see if they will take him or if there is a bat sanctuary near by that you or they can send him. I wouldn't try this on your own unless you know exactly what you are doing. There is bound to be someone who can help you. If the zoo can't help then try calling animal control for information about a bat sanctuary. You could even try doing a search online for sanctuaries around your area.
Good Luck

Leave it alone for now, and just periodically check on it....anything else will probably be detrimental.
