Whats the difference between a report and a essay?

I am doing an essay on world war II Sword Beach, and i want to know what the difference between a report and an essay

I would say a report--that is reporting on something (e.g. book report)-- would be a type of essay. Essays can range further--political essays, humorous essays, etc.

essay you are trying to prove a thesis (a point) a report is presenting information that the reader might not know otherwise.
