Born Sept. 18, 1895, Tanabe was named the world's oldest male after the death of the Puerto Rican Emiliano Mercado Del Toro, who died aged 115 last January.

Emiliano Mercado Del Toro of Puerto Rico was named the world’s oldest living man at 113, replacing Fred Hale, who died on Nov. 19, 2004. Del Toro is also the oldest living U.S. veteran, having served two months in the U.S. Army during Word War I.

He lives in Isabela, Puerto Rico, and was born on Aug. 21, 1891 in Red Cabo. He was born the same year in which Thomas Edison patented the radio.

Del Toro was born while Puerto Rico was suffering through a hurricane that killed over 3,000 people.

Puerto Rico, too, was still under Spanish control, when he was born. He saw it gain independence in 1897, and then become a protectorate of the U.S.

The Guinness Book of World Records officially named him the oldest man alive on January 17, 2005, when he was 113 years and 149 days old.
