you dont need a reciever. if your laptop has wireless built in then all you need is a wireless router. it should give you range of up to 300 ft with most routers. if your laptop does not have wireless built in then you would need a wireless acrd for laptops and a wireless router. now if you have a wireless modem then you dont need anything

If you are using a laptop that is WIFI capable, then you will need to get the signal from your modem to this other room. This can be done in a couple of ways. One would be to run a cable from room to room. Usually not very convenient. The second method be to go WIFI. That would mean you would need a WIFI router. You would run the cable from the modem to the router, and the router would the broadcast the signal through out the house.
The same methods apply with a desk top unit except that you would need to install a WIFI card into one of the PC's PCI slots. This is not a tough job, and only requires that you remove and replace about 3 screws.
Once again, if we are dealing with a lap top, a WIFI router can make the lap top much more usable in that you would be able to use it just about any time and place in and around your home.

wait what?... if you only have one computer you most likely dont need a router unless u plan to move your computer a lot (like laptop)?
if not all you need to do is is connect the cable modem direclty to the desktop computer
a router is used to connect 1 cable modem to many computers or is used as a wireless router to use 1 cable modem to wireless transmitt "wifi" signal to a laptop (most modern laptops have a reciever built in) or computer with a wireless card (receiver - so u dont have to run a wire)... also new gadgets such as the psp, xbox 360, ps3, wii or iphone was wifi capabilities that can yous your router to access the internet...
all for all, if you dont plan on moving within the house area with your "computer" you dont need a router

The cable would be sent to the Modem first and then attached to the router. This would be where ever you cable hook up is. The receiver is a card or a USB device that you plug into your computer to receive the signal from the router. you can get them for about 45.00

never heard of a receiver, but the router yes. if you have your modem in one room and computer in another then you will need a router or wireless router and wireless card for the computer if its not a laptop with built in wireless.

it depends on what type of computer you have ...you didn't say if the 1 computer was a laptop or desktop....if laptop then a router would be useful so that you can go in any room, however if you only have a desktop then a router is not necessary. hope this helps you out.

I bought a dandy little receiver about the size of a plug-in memory module at Best Buy for the computer downstairs. I liked it so much I bought a second one for the laptop. They both work great!
You should be able to find one at any store that carries computer hardware.

You need a wireless capable router and a 'wireless adapter' for your PC unless you have a laptop with the wireless built in.
