In a normal situation this is how it works. The incoming signal/phone line is connected to the internet providers modem, just like it is now. But instead of running the cable from the modem to the computer you will be connecting it to the router instead. The router will then send the signal to both it's antenna, and to it's out ports. There are usually 4 of them. If you intend to go with a WIFI signal, then you won't need the second cable unless you get a second computer. You could then either run a cable to this second unit or install a WIFI card so it could receive the signal with a cable. Also, When set up WIFI, any other computer that comes within range of your routers signal can connect to the web also. This does have it's draw backs in that someone sitting in your driveway or on the street in front of your house could receive this signal too. To stop this signal "stealing" all routers come with instructions on how to encrypt the signal so that only the computers that know this encryption can connect.

I hope I haven't confused you "to" much.

First off, if you're new to wireless, have someone else set up the wi-fi part, to keep it secure.

YES, a regular phone cable (RJ-11) will work from the wall to the phone line in on the router. Assuoming your router is ALSO a modem, then no, you wouldn't need you old modem. If the router is JUST a router, then you'll need the phone line going to your modem, then ethernet (RJ-45) going from the modem out port to the router's WAN input port.

You will want at LEAST WEP encryption for your wireless network.

and if you use any passwords like "1234567890" or ANYthing that is remotely easy to guess, I might have to cry.

Use a password generator, and then write the password down and tape it to your modem. (on the bottom)
