when he told aunt polly: "some of us pumped on our heads..."
i know that he was trying to stop her from knowing that he went swimming, but what does pumped on mean?
please help me and thank you

The water pumps that we used to have had a handle that you "pumped" up and down to draw water.
Sometimes, you had to prime them first by pouring some water down into the opening at the top, so you would keep a bucket on hand for that-and for keeping water around.

It means pumped water on their heads - as you figured out, Tom doesn't want her to know he went swimming, so he has to explain how his hair got wet.
