I have had several addictions to break, the most important to me would of been my drinking. I had to look at what it was costing me and had to definalty replace it with social support. The most important though is knowing forever that I do have this addiction and at no time can I ever return to it, because I have been sober.

Two bad habits I thought I would NEVER break; partly because I loved them sooooo much. I quit smoking by smoking a pack straight- nonstop, until I was sick. never touched another cigarette again. Then 5 yrs later I quit drinking! I had been drinking since I was 13; I quit when I was 30- cold turkey. HOW? You may not believe it, but truth is, God took away my desire for alcohol. Yep, I gave my life to the lord at age 30, and I had not had a drink in over 7 years. God can do the same for you!

30 times of doing something creates a habit. To break it, say no 30 times you want it. Then avoid it for ...ever?

I think it depend on your addictive habits. Drugs and emotional habits are much different than just habits...like bad spelling or nail chewing...

Nope i still smoke and drink. If you do smoke and you want to stop...take a Smoking Cessation class. It's offered at most health care establishments. Also if you want to quit drinking...try and Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program. But that one didn't really help me and it was 8 weeks long. I guess you just have to be a strong enough person and quit cold turkey. Oh and to replace the habit? Sex or chew gum.

I stopped smoking in 2005 and went straight to Extra Strong Mints. Wonderful mints they are. Had to cut those too or I would not have any teeth left !! Now I have no bad habbits so I guess I turned into a very boring person.
Good question... Have a Xmas Star !!

I used to suck my thumb as a young kid but I wanted to stop because I felt I was too old (I was 6 or so) so I would dip my thumb in nail polish remover before bed so I didn't want to go anywhere near it. Worked perfectly and didn't feel weak or want to do anything else like it. In retrospect, nail polish remover probably wasn't safe for a six year old and I wouldn't let my kids near the stuff!

Anytime you are addicted to something the first step to breaking the addiction is knowing that you want to stop and giving yourself a reason why you should stop. Then when you have a relapse you think of the reason you want to stop and you try again.

Booze (25) and Camels (43). Cigarettes were nothing, although I still get the urge. Booze almost ended it; hallucinations, convulsions, DTs. Should've gone to detox. The urge to drink or smoke goes away fast. So I just wait.

After more than 20 years, I quit smoking.
I chewed Nicorette for months and kept pretzel sticks at hand. I talked to myself when I was weak (repeating mantras).
