These are characters in an English sit-com, which is shown nightly, in the US and Canada, on PBS. Hyacinth, Richard's wife, is a particularily obnoxious, pretentious woman who makes poor Richard's life somewhat difficult. Elisabeth is a very thoughtful and understanding woman who lives next door, and quite often sympathizes with Ricahrd. The show is a comedy, has anybody watched it?

I love that show! I think that Richard would like to run off with Rose. Could you imagine the explanation that Hyacinth would give to her neighbors!

No, no. Richard wouldn't be able to get away from Hyacinth in the first place -- he is too busy making sure that delivery men don't brush up against her wallpaper. As well, Hyacinth would never put up with Richard living with someone who has no regard for Royal Doulton china (with hand-painted periwinkles) and, of course, her Sheridan would be appalled. And even if Richard should do this, it would be too much of an upset for everybody else. Imagine Hyacinth on the phone to her sister Violet (the one with the swimming pool and room for a pony), or visiting that poor, poor Vicar. No, sorry -- not a great idea.

Our station changed to "Thermal Man" a few months ago, miss Hyacinth terribly. Wasn't sure that Richard isn't tapping Elisabeth, there's a lot of eye play between them. Daisy's old boy was always my favorite though -- could identify with the grizzly cuss.
(witch hazel, think you've made a very astute disclosure)

I LOVE this show. Ms. Routledge is a genius...who else could play the ever annoying Hyacinth so well.
I also enjoy "As Time Goes By" and "Are You Being Served". I truly enjoy "Waiting for God" but it's not been seen around my way in quite a while. I AM Diana.

Richard cannot leave Hyacinth. There'd be no appearances to keep up. I watch it when no one else is around. I'm the only one who appreciates the show.

I was going to say "who are these people," then you explained. I think I might have seen it once a year or so ago, so I have no opinion for you. Sorry. I get The BBC but I have difficulty understanding accents and some are just to hard to understand. I do watch Hotel Babylon, which I love, and sometimes Torchwood.

Poor Elizabeth, she always gets in a tizzy when Hyacinth demands she should have a cop of tea, no wonder her hands shake.

I love that show. Even watch the re-runs, something I almost never do. Some comments lead me to believe that Sheridan might be gay. Anyone else have that impression?

my mom's favourite show.. Keeping Up Appearances.. we just call it "Mrs. Bucket" :)
.. good idea, but that would leave Elisabeth's brother (the musician - forgot his name) to be Hyacinth's only target..
Witch Hazel - yeah Sheridan is gay
