Is there a program I can get and get the cable for the obd that does not cost to much to check codes on cars at my house? It is a pain running up to the parts store to see what the codes say.

Try searching E:bay for ELM327.
It's very good and I got mine for £40.00.

you can purchase a "code only" scanner at Auto Zone....i personally hate that place but its probably the most inexpensive and easiest place to get one

What's your definition of "cost too much"? They aren't cheap. Well, you can find cheap, or good. Take your pick.
