At the post office I work at we normally write letters back and deliver them Christmas Eve with candy canes if there is a return address or when the carrier picks it up out of the box notes the address on the letter. If there isn't a return address and we don't know where they came from we post them by the door the carriers use for all the carriers to read.

I'm sure some of them accidently get thrown out, but alot of post offices do something special, l like designate someone to answer the letters, or an operation like Operation Letters to Santa (see link below). Luckily the Chrismas spirit isn't lost, even on busy postal workers. Happy Holidays! p.s. Maybe you should send a letter to see if your local post office does anything?

My understanding was that the Post Office, at least the English one, used to have a department that sent stock letters back to kids who wrote to Santa. The letter said something like:-
Thank you for your letter which I have read with great interest. I will try my best to give you the presents you asked for but only if you are very good. If you get something else don't worry, it's what Mummy or Daddy told me to bring you. Merry Christmas. Santa.
I believe that this service has now been suspended as a cost cutting exercise.

Why they got to Santa Claus of course ..
It was so...one Christmas Eve, over 150 years ago, the little nameless town finally got its name. Santa Claus, Indiana as it is still named to this day.
As you may have guessed, this small town of just over 2,000 residents is all about Christmas. From the town's name to the names on the street signs, as well as witnessing the town's village décor, the holiday spirit year-round is very evident.
Each and every Christmas season, hundreds of thousands of letters arrive at the town's small post office. In fact, this post office handles more mail, many times over, during the holidays than it does all other months combined! These letters, often inscribed in crayon but with the utmost sincerity, have but one name addressed on the envelope's face. Yeah, you guessed it...Santa Claus.
So, this holiday season when your child or grandchild asks you for a postage stamp so that they can mail their heart-felt message to Santa Claus, you can honestly agree that their letters will most likely find its intended destination...

I believe they are shipped off to little towns in the Midwest U.S. named North Pole or Santa Claus, and in school, an assignment is to write these kids back pretending to be Santa Claus. Or, there really is a Santa Claus and he personally answers them. I'm leaning towards the first one.

They remove the stamps and reuse them for themselves.
After all the poor poor postal worker gets paid so little and works Sooooooooooooooo hard that they should be allowed to do this. You know that ALL government employees are
underpaid and overworked don't you. Now, let's discuss the Easter bunny ok?

Well any little kid who actually sends letters to "Santa Clause" usually just gives the letter to their parents (because he would probably be too little to mail it himself), and the parents just read the letter and write back. But whenever a kid himself mails it, the Post Office probably writes back themselves.
