You better to get the 2001. There are marked improvements on the 2001 model, including transmission and chassis reinforcements.

These 2 items alone can cost you $10k ($6k for tranny, $4k for subframe) if they fail and IMO, the most important factors for your decision.

Many owners of 1999-2000 cars have been reporting automatic transmission failures as well as rear subframe failure. There's even a class action lawsuit in CA against BMW NA for the subframe failure because it's a design fault.

Turner Motorsports sells a reinforcement kit which unfortunately has been selling like hot cakes. Even though the kit only costs $150, installing the kit is a very tedious process; and takes 12-14 labor hours in a bodyshop. And the kit is only good for the early stages of the failure.

These have since been corrected in the 2001 cars; even though you do need to keep an eye on replacing your automatic transmission fluid every 50k-60k miles no matter what.

With the car at 100,000miles, make sure all the fluids/oils get changed immediately. Especially the automatic transmission.

Don't worry about the cosmetic differences of that roof antenna or the slight difference in engine size. The 2001 is definitely a safer bet.

Modern BMW's are very reliable. All the hype about constant break downs is overplayed, the vast majority of BMW owners never have any problems with their cars and only really require typical maintenance, like oil and a filter. They are very well engineered, and it shows. $8,000 seems a bit high, though - I would try to barter it down. The 323i isn't particularly powerful or fast, so I don't think that would be a big problem. 110,000 miles is nothing - we have a 1980 BMW with over 300,000 miles on it, and it runs like new. If it has been properly maintained, it won't be a headache at all. I would probably take it by a dealer for a pre-purchase inspection, though - they can run some diagnostics and tell you if you're getting a good deal.

The millage is not too bad. But trust me you will pay dearly when it comes to maintenance. BMW is the only car I have ever driven. I do now have a Saab, but it's not quite the same.

BMWs are not inexpensive to maintain. Even with 100K miles on it, if it has been properly maintained, it will easily do another 100K miles. If it has not been properly maintained, it will not go far.

Ask for the maintenance records.
