Gavin, the decision is yours alone. That being said,in making your decision, realize that Vista is here to stay and XP will be obsolete. With 1GB you do not have enough space to run the Vista home premium. That gives you all the bells and whistles. You could run Basic, but that is just a glorified XP.Throughout the software info available you will see towards the bottom of the page the necessity of upgrading your computer to run certain features. You would not get the aero interface.Your computer needs 1GB for Vista, plus at the least 500GB for basic computing.I upgraded both my RAM and my hard drive and also a graphics card.Only after doing this did I get to enjoy the O.S. Except for user groups and researching myself,I have developed a knowledge of the system.I am still learning.Yet I do not regret buying Vista.Only lately do you see a computer with 3GB.Most are 2GB with dual core processors. You did not say which program you have.If Basic, you are missing out.Stick with it.You won't regret it.As an afterthought-do not confuse your Ram with you hard drive. They are entirely different components.Enjoy. Nan.

It's really your call whether you want to go back to XP - it's more stable in my opinion but Microsoft has rolled out performance updates for Vista - and the first service pack is coming (hopefully soon). I really can't tell you how much ram it will use on a system with 1 gig - but mine has 4 gigs and windows is currently using 40%.

Well many people are switching back to xp. But if you just want to have the new stuff then go with Vista. Personally I go with what is best for me and my computer.

1 GB of RAM won't cut it in vista if you want all the nice effects. I had 1 GB and went out to buy another as it used 73% of the 1 GB at all times

reccommended ram is 1gb but the actual usage varies depends upon your use and the version of Vista that you're using. Basic versions don't include Aero Interface.. that saves some ram.. and usage habits effect the most..
