morals are a persons beliefs in context with the society in which they live. They are formed by ones interaction with their environment, and the rules of society. Your morals can be different than the society in which you live. The purpose they have in society is to give a reference as to what the group feels is correct behavior. i.e. it is wrong to kill, steal etc. Your own morals might be it is wrong to steal from poor people but ok to cheaton your taxes.

For most people, morality is that set of behaviors that is acceptable to the society we live in. Our parents and the rest of our society trains us from infancy by using praise. We're praised when our behavior is acceptable and not praised when our behavior is unacceptable. By the time we're adults, we don't need direct praise because we can just imagine praise.

Society's training leaves us with a set of feelings we call conscience. We feel bad when we are dishonest and good when we tell the truth.

Society trains us because that is how the older generations control the younger generations.

One problem is that when people see that they've been trained like animals, the training loses some of it's effectiveness. We resent such training and we might rebel.

In order to back up the behavior training, our society will point to a Higher Moral Authority, i.e. God, as the source of the acceptable behavior. In other words, it is not simply the older generation training the younger generation, it is the older generation telling the younger generation what the Higher Moral Authority says is acceptable behavior.

Our own ability to deceive ourselves also plays a large part. Instead of understanding that our conscience is imposed on us by society training, we imagine that our conscience means that we are inherently moral, i.e. that we were born moral. It make us feel good to think that we are naturally good.

Morals are the right and wrong that guide our lives. You don't have to be religious to have morals. It is the voice of your inner self that tells you how to live your life. We all have them. I suppose they come from your upbringing, your life experiences, and your friends. Mostly though, I think they come from your heart. They guide our every action in our daily lives. The world would not exist if we didn't have them. We would have destroyed everything if not for morals.
