It depends what "they" is a pronoun for. Example:

1. Loose tigers are dangerous to the society

2. Radical beliefs are dangerous for the society.

I would leave 'the' out in each example and go with "to society".

"They are a danger to society" is a shorter version.

It doesn't seem clear-cut to me; so it's an interesting question. However, I think you are more likely to be correct using "to" in every case rather than "for" in every case.
