Well I wouldn't argue with any of those, except that you seem to want something that has off road capacity, like maybe a super-mottard style bike.
Full blown versions like the KTMs or the KLRs aren't for the fainthearted, the mildest might be something like the BMW F650... Quite a few of them on the 2nd hand market now the larger F800 has come out. If you get ambitions you can even enter the Paris Dakar Rally on one, Like Charlie Boorman did.
I've quite a lot of affection for the big Single-pot "Thumpers", and I know a couple of folks that will not have more than one big pot on any of their bikes. Good fun and safe riding.

The Honda Hornet is a great all round bike with good performance and superb handling.
The Triumph Street triple is another good one but the waiting list is a bit long at the moment and wouldn't be quite as well mannered as the Hornet.
Another good one with a low seat height is the Suzuki GSR600 which doesn't get great press like the other two,but I've had great fun on one these I borrowed while my GSXR was in for a service.Best option would be the (new) Hornet though which also comes with the benefit of ABS which is great if your commuting through the winter.
Hope this helps

either the Honda Hornet or the Suzuki Bandit 600's or there's the Suzuki gs500e also the Ducati Monster a 600 and the Bmw f650 funduro. Is light but sits up so better visibilty
They are all commuter types
You could try the zzr600 but its a touring bike and likely to be a little heavy if you are commuting around town also lies down a little whilst riding.

Suz SV 650. Great allrounder and not too expensive.
Guzzi 750 Breva. Shaft drive and a very nice light bike.
Golden oldie - Honda VF 750.
If you can ride your GPZ you can ride any of these.

bandit 600 without a doubt, but trust me as soon as you have ridden this bike within an inch from its life you will be very bored off it. For the difference in a few hundred quid, go straight in with a bandit 1200 and you will have it for years.

Improve your riding skills first. Just because you got your license does not mean your an expert rider. Get some time under your belt with the bike you have then move up later on, Don't be in such a hurry.

All the previous answers are great suggestions, but I would also suggest the 600 Fazer.
