Most elderly people have all the material things they need. A nice food basket with cheese, fruit nuts etc. is nice.

People of that age enjoy looking at photos of their grand-children or grand-nieces/nephews. An album of photos is a good gift.

Or else a book of crossword puzzles for mental jogging.

You can also get a book on making computers easy for older people, as someone that age may have retired before computers were in common use in the workplace and consequently may feel left out of it.

A flameless candle: They smell nice, like a candle, and they look like a candle, but they're battery operated so there's no chance of forgetting about it or falling asleep while it's burning.

A nice throw blanket

A digital photo frame loaded with family pictures, so they can just plug it in and see a bunch of family pictures all day long.

Flowers for a woman, or a nice Christmas plant or mini-Christmas tree for a man or a woman.

Large-print magazine subscription

A nice brooch (pin) for a woman, or a nice comfy sweater for a man.

A gift card to a place like Target, Walmart, or even the grocery store--many, many seniors are on a fixed budget and have to watch their expenses carefully.

I wouldn't buy food unless you knew they didn't have any dietary restrictions.

You did not say female or male because it makes the difference. Depending on how active they are and how independent they are. Go to a Vinatage or Antique store and purchase something that reminds them of yesteryear. They love to reflect back. Your gift does not have to be expensive. It could be an old radio or somthing. The idea is to purchase something in your range that would truly bless them.

When my grandpa was in his 80's he really got a kick out of those talking head animals like the mounted Bass fish that would talk or sing when you walked by it. he had a duck that would yell at you when you walked by it. I think Grandpa was just too much of a jokster though. You could go with house slippers and such stuff to keep them warm. Unless you live in southern states or SouthWest.

Age is not really a factor in gift selection. If you are buying for an 18 year old, you ask,"What are their interests?" and select accordingly. If you are buying for a 40 year old, you ask, "What are their interests?" and buy accordingly. If you are buying for an 80 year old, you ask, "What are their interests?" and buy accordingly. I am not quite 80 yet, but I would like a good book and a spiral cut ham. You can send it to me at ... Merry Christmas!

a nice afghan. A sweater if it's cold. embroidered handkerchiefs are always nice. They usually appreciate nice cards and attention. Take them to lunch. a gift card to their favorite restaurant with enough money for two on it. A back scratcher.
If you like, talk to the person/people you are giving the gifts to and ask them what they would like - it is always okay to outright ask someone what they would like, it takes away the uncertainty of giving and they appreciate that you care enough to ask. Also, a little is a lot for them.
Good luck!
