The conquest is in the fight. Opposite polarities conflict by reason of their paradoxical natures, but there is a mystery. All dualities are really triads, their are really tripartite. What this means is that the solution for Dark/light, good/evil, male/female is in the middle, or in third quality which transcends the limitations of the two. Ego is not just duality in the sense of 2 things, it is a complete mess of divisions. The ideal is not to negate but to harmonious balance. The ideal is in the yin and yang symbol, the ideal is in the bridal chamber or marriage when a man and female becomes "one flesh." A male and female are representations of this pattern of polarities at this level, illustrates the great division that exist on many levels of being. But we know that the division between male and female is fulfilled in the child, which represents the higher reality of the parents, or represents that union as its product.
What I am getting at is the reality that these differing polarities is vital and it exist as a law, you can't have Light without dark, you can't have the male without the female, polarities initiates their opposite. There can never not be ego, if there is no fight then there is no progression, you eliminate the field of battle then their is no place to work from. Ego is a shattered mirror, each shard tells a story of some aspect/personality of your mind and the stimulus that invokes it. The truth is our higher nature has no other choice but to work through the ego, the ego (or organic self) can be said to be that field where our spiritual principle has been planted and the struggle which exist in mind is the battles between the polarities of mind that our thoughts have movement through, as each polarity has a division unto itself since all things are holographic. The true battle is between the sexes within ourselves. The male and the female, the growth is in the fruit of the union of the male and female. Our nourishment comes through the impressions of the polarities that come into union.
Ego can't be negated, mind can't be truly negated but these things must be worked over. That is my opinion since all dualities are triads, there is always a resolution or higher plane where the apparent duality is resolved in one. Hence why so many pagan stories have trinities, the Father/active and mother/reflective is resolved in the child/son/neutralizing force. This is a pattern that is truly divine and exist in all and throughout all, even in the atom. You are the leader of your own inner world, you must bring about that world peace from that inner conflict. Peace is not won by negation of what another wants in life or etc, but rather it is found through understanding and becoming harmonious. Our minds must become like our bodies which are in the pattern of the mind. How our bodies while in their prime work in a harmonious manner for the whole of the organism, where all organs are harmonious with the other. Nothing is negated or the body would suffer loss in its activity.
- I'm Gnostic which is why I hold what I do about this. We seek balance and harmony in everything, and we account negation in the same manner if we had a debate with another, and instead of finding common ground and hearing their point and seeing their perspective and displaying empathy just ignore them and block them out of our senses like they don't exist, completely disregard them. And what I am getting at is the ego-personality is a fragmentation, and each personality fragment is like a person in itself, like a cell in the body and we must bring world peace. Peace is never found by ignoring a people or forcing things upon them, it invokes quite the opposite in different ways (ignore them, treat them like they don't exist they gain power and grow stronger in the shadows in opposition and will give account sooner or later making our first state greater than our last. Then the other is you force your aspects of mind to be a certain thing, which will invoke rebellion, it will initiate the opposite to what you are attempting to accomplish, since it is by force without actually understanding what is). The ego must be approached as child, one whom we must rear up into our single ideal, to move from divided to undivided. If there wasn't supposed to be a fight then there would not be one, that there is one means that there is something that must be achieved.

'If !? What say you?
We need no more hypothesize about the ego's existence than about the Sun's that shines above us and is felt everyday, which 'benefits' plant and animal alike. The ego is no less a part of the same substrate in which Dark and Light exist than any other reality of life. Dark and light, antagonism, and conflict are but parts of the signature of this world, this universe.
This said conflict is the bread and butter of that in which the substrate itself is 'Opposites' writ large. Without this, not only would there be no "fight," there could be no universe.

I do not have an Ego, so I would not know what conflict is between dark and light. A fighter I would say Yes, but when someone does something to me or my Family.

There is a mateial ego and a spiritual ego. Ego means the self. So we have our false identification with the self and the actual identification. material ego means we identify with our body and mind.
We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. When one understand the actual self they understand We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy. I am glad I know who I am. So now there is no conflict anylonger. The conflict is when one is identifying with the material illusion and false ego.

My experience is that the conditioned ego 'identity' is essentially darkness because its perception is always clouded by conditioned beliefs about self/world. The authentic Self could be said to BE light because in the absence of the distorted views of the ego, one has perfect clarity of perception.
The battle or jihad is between Self and the little indoctrinated ego identity.

yes, ego is what makes you believe in seperation, in this world of duality
with out ego, all becomes one, and there is no conflict. therefore, truly from the highest perspective, there is no good or evil, dark or light...all comes from the One
enlightened beings are free from ego- this is what makes them Holy (wholey) and unconditionally loving

In us, there are id, ego and superego. There is conflict in us, it is just a matter of how you handle your feeling. Factors that affect your judgement will be your environment, social life, knowledge.
