Random, I don't think it is. For one thing it sure saves on phone bills. My best friend lives in Texas and we usually IM everyday. My last phone bill was astronomical so we decided to IM instead and call occasionally. I think it's fun. I think even doing THIS is fun. But, I've become kind of dependent on it. My PC died a month ago, and I had to get a new hard drive. It was TORTURE. We are relying on technology a little bit too much. Like GPS trackers, and hey, I even saw a commercial for a new toothbrush that tells YOU how long and where you should brush your teeth. And these cars that can parallel park (I wish THAT had been invented earlier!) Pretty much people won't be able to do without these things. And if you told me in 1980 (when I graduated from High School-yeah ha, I'm old) that all of this was going to happen, I would have thought you'd lost your MIND. But I'm also disabled and I rely on my PC for communication ...maybe TOO MUCH. Sorry, went off on a rant. But I don't think it's a waste of time. (LOL at least everyone knows how to type now! (Back in the stone ages, there were such things as Typing Class.) ha ha

No... but some will argue it is because it is better to spend time talking to people in real life... but this is just another way to connect with others we may not have another way to in real life. Many of the people I've met on here I couldn't have met any other way.

It can be if that's the only thing you do. You need to read, listen to music, and interact with live people too.
