What should I buy for her?

Keep the cat food and the cat inside at night. An open dish of food sitting out will attract all kinds of animals, animals that could quite possibly injure or even kill your cat. Keep both in at night and you won't have to worry about either.

What Do Possums Eat

I have heard that possums will eat almost anything if it's dead but I don't know of them being the kind of animal that kills for food. I do know they will eat crackers with peanut butter, fed one last deer hunting season. they also love cat food, we once had many outdoor cats which led to having some huge possum hanging around all the time. so, anyway, if something happen that the guinea pig died then the possum will probably have enjoyed him, sorry

Be careful, if you feed it you will only encourage it. Try to discourage it and maybe it will go away. Unless you want to keep it as a pet, which is not recommended, do not feed it. Where there is one possum, there is bound to be more possums....soon you will have too many possums to take care of!!!!

yahoo answers is sadly the place where the Idiocracy of America perpetuates. Opossums eat insects, rodents, rotting fruit and carrion (dead animals). Of these the greatest benefit is their diet of ticks. One possum can eat up to 5000 ticks on any given week.

Classically persimmons, but I don' know where you can *buy* them.

TEchnically, they are "omnivores" which means they will eat *anything*, but I think the persimmons would be a clue towards fruits and berries.

YOu could call your local agricultural extension agent.

"possum growers and breeders association" returns 73 hits, but I cannot find a web page for them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possum
says "vegetables, flowers and tender young shoots from gardens"

http://opossum.craton.net/onews.htm has stories about possums.

Possums eat anything they damn well please, mostly things that cannot get away quickly enough. You could try predator urine(red fox, coyote, wolf, bobcat, available at hunting stores) around your yard to scare away critters, but it may also scare away your cat. Life trap may work too, but again, your cat may get in before the possum does.

Put out a separate dish and water. Keep the cat's food indoors. Possums and other night animals will always take the easy way out, wouldn't you? :)

Opossums are omnivorous, which means they eat a combination of plantlife, meat, and insect matter. We humans are also omnivorous. But I am not so sure that you should be worrying about feeding the thing. You should be thinking of ways to get rid of it, not hurt it, but drive it away, because opossums are known to carry various diseases such as rabies, which could be spread to your cat. Find someone who can come out there and get rid of it, or start feeding your cat inside.
