I have found that Buddhism has done a lot of research into this specific question -- here is a bit about happiness and Buddhism.

Though nibbana (Nirvana, Enlightenment, etc.) is the ultimate goal, how is it that Buddhists might find happiness in a world that they know is full of change, uncertainty, unsatisfactoriness? Even when happiness is possible, there is no escape from old age, sickness and death. What Buddhism does teach is that there are skillful ways of living. These include, following certain moral precepts and working on various meditation techniques that are conducive to well-being.

The five precepts are moral guidelines that - because they are skillful - lead to happy states. Not killing or harming living beings, not lying, not stealing, not indulging in inappropriate sexual activity, not drinking or taking drugs, mean that unhappy states are less likely to occur. To harm a living being, for example, has bad karmic consequences. It can lead to feelings of remorse and regret for what one has done. It will lead to suffering, whatever, according to the Buddhist doctrine of karma.

Metta

A strong element of Buddhism is cultivating strong states of mind. These include resisting a tendency towards anger and fostering loving kindness (metta) and compassion (karuna). Many Buddhists actively practice meditation techniques that develop good will to all beings. In certain schools, there is the practice of seeing each individual being as if they were your mother. The kindness and good will you would extend to your mother, you extend to others universally. Also there is the compassion of empathizing deeply with another's suffering. If they suffer, it is your suffering too - there is no separation!

So, how do we find happiness in this world? One message from Buddhism is the deep truth that one finds happiness by seeking the happiness of others. There is no other way. This isn't a soft option. To love is to give endlessly, to fail repeatedly, to see the weaknesses in oneself on a daily basis, to fail an to fail again... but then to get up and try again.

[by paying attention -- being mindful -- of the thoughts that arise in our minds, we can stop those thoughts that are unhelpful (don't add fuel to the fire), and learn more about how our minds fool us all the time. Best con-artist you'll ever meet is your own mind : ) )

I would recommend that you read about Buddhism -- it is the only system ever developed with the sole intention of ending human suffering, and I believe it works if you give it a sustained try. Plus there is no faith in miracles or supernatural beings needed. Just a well thought out system for attaining what you seek -- happiness. -- dk]

How to Have a Happy Life

We always wish to have a happy life, but what do we really mean when we say "happy"? And will all the good intentions we have bring us happiness? Let us contemplate the wisdom of an enlightend master, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, to help us focus on what we really mean and how to achieve it. This is what he says: Happiness does not only come from achievement. When you were a child you were simply happy. So that is your nature. And every moment, with every single action, we are all seeking to be happy because it is the original nature. You were taught about philosophies, gods, heaven and hell, but nobody taught you to be happy. If you go against your own nature to be happy, you will never get anywhere. And to be happy is not the ultimate aspect of life. To be happy is the fundamental aspect of life. If you are not happy, what else can you do with your life? Only if you are happy, can other great possibilities arise in your life.

The first and most fundamental responsibility for a human being is to become joyous being himself or herself. It doesn't matter what you are pursuing in your life, whether it is business, money, power, education, service or something else, you are doing so because somewhere deep inside you is a feeling that this will bring you happiness.

Every single action that we perform on this planet springs from an aspiration to be happy. Today we are seeking happiness so vigorously that the very life of the planet is being threatened.

When you are fundamentally joyous, when you don't have to do anything to be happy, then every dimension of your life--the way you perceive and express yourself and the world--will change. You will have no more vested interests because whether you do something or you don't do something, whether you get something or don't get something, whether something happens or doesn't happen, you will be joyous by your nature, and your actions will rise to a completely different level.

So it is definitely time we look inward and see how to create personal well-being. From your own experience of life you can clearly see that true well-being will come to you only if your interiority changes. At present, the quality of your life is not determined by the clothes that you wear, the educational qualifications that you carry, the family background that you come from or the bank balances that you hold. Rather, the quality of your life depends upon how peaceful and joyous you are within yourself.
Unless something of true value happens within you, you can't do anything of tremendous value to the world. Whatever you do, it is only your inner quality that you are going to spread. Whether you like it or not, that is the reality. If you are concerned about the world, the first thing you must do is transform yourself into a joyous being.

To be peaceful and happy is a universal wish, but the question is How to attain it? Suppose something has happened to upset your sense of peace. First you might quarrel with your spouse, then with other people, and then maybe you'll yell at your boss. By that time people are suggesting you need to go to a doctor. If you go to a doctor he'll probably give you a pill to calm you down. With just a little bit of chemical, your system becomes peaceful. It may be just for a short while, but your system does become peaceful.

So what you call peace is just a certain kind of chemistry. Similarly, every emotion you experience--your joy, your anger, your ecstasy, your turmoil, your fear, your stress--each has a chemical basis. Now, there is a technology, an inner science that can enable you to create a chemistry so that you can be peaceful, happy and joyous by your own nature, not subject to what is happening around you. This is the science of yoga. It will change the whole perspective of your life.

Discovering yoga as the route to peace and joy is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you and your loved ones.

I think we agree that there is not this one way to life the best life. There is not a list of actions which you should obey but a general method of planning and living out a happy life: be convinced that the things you do and think are the right ones.

Most likely you still have to add some of those things to your life, and some of which you own you need to remove or adjust. Which of those things these are, many can tell you, each with different points of view and reasons.

Pick one, follow it with confidence, and always be ready to perform a complete turnaround if you find a better way.

To understand who we are in reality. FIrst we have to understand the basics, such as-
We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy.

The spiritual soul is sat cit ananda Vigraha - it is made of knowledge, eternity and bliss, therefore every one wants to be the most intelligent, never dies and be happy - but can't due to identification of the real ego with the false ego, intelligence, mind and physical body.
So, the answer for your questions on how to have a happy life is find your real self, and that can be done trough a spiritual master.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Not for the 'things' of this world but that you can know Him (Jesus) and his forgiveness through repentance (a turning away from sin) and believing He died and rose again for your sins.
Start to read His message to Mankind ..The Bible.
