In my believe, they are quite different.
Fate is determined by 'destiny',that is,an outcome of events.
Coincidence is an accidental occurance.

I believe in both.
Coincidence is the most common- since not everything we do has a worldly meaning. However, it is hard to decipher the difference between the two. For example, I wouldn't say that I am wearing a blue shirt today because of coincidence. Though it is highly likely that fate didn't "choose" the shirt I'm wearing today, it probably has in some other time in my life.
Fate is bigger than coincidence because it happens for a reason. It could be something like choosing a specific shirt, and it could be packing your bags and taking the next plane to wherever... Either way, fate leads you to something profound.
The hard part here is if you think about life like a maze: Each road you take will breed zillions of different "sub-roads", or exits, so to speak. I believe that fate ALLOWS coincidence to occur. No matter which exits we take, we'll end up on the same major route, and from there, we can allow fate to carry us where it may...

'Follow your instincts.' People love to give advice like this. They urge each other to listen to the 'still, small voice inside'. This would be easy if there were only one voice to listen to. The task is harder when you appear to have an entire choir singing different messages from various parts of your psyche. It is not even as if they are singing in harmony. One part of you now is pushing you to move in a particular direction. Another clearly wants you to do the opposite. You cannot use your intellect alone to decide what to do, for you have to follow your heart now. But you can at least use your brain to work out which part of your heart to follow

Saying fate is just a set up for excuses.
It doesn't matter which it actually is though, since we as humans are taking life as a series of coincidence.

God knew everything that would happen from the beginning, and allows them to happen... Coincidence implies that things happen by accident... I don't believe in coincicence... I believe that God causes things to happen which could be inerpreted as fate.
