depending on where on earth you are there is a frost line below which the earth does not freeze. and shortly below that again depending on your location is an an area in which the temperature varies only 1 or 2 degrees. and stays at around 55 degrees F. year round here in Arkansas. as you go deeper there is a gradual increase in temperature. the deep gold mines in south Africa are some two miles deep and so hot that the miners work in short 15 or 30 minute shifts. we believe that the earths molten core is the cause of the in crease in temperature.

It's because of the tilt of the earth. The tilt makes less sunlight reach the earth during the cooler months and more during the warmer months -- which goes along with the shorter winter days and longer summer days and also explains why the seasons are opposite on the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Actually, below 5 feet depth, assuming there are no geological activities underground, is constant at near 55 degrees. This is because soil is a VERY poor conductor of heat. Therefore, atmospheric heating and cooling doesn't change the temperature very much- only fractions of a degree.
