I will be leaving from Shreveport and going to San Antonio Texas and I am so very worried. I have never traveled on a greyhound, and I am scared that I could possibly get lost or accidentally board the wrong bus. I am just so worried. How can I ensure that everything will be ok. I am a 20 yr. old female and I will be traveling alone. I am just so very frightened of getting lost or getting my things taken. I need some advice please!

With Greyhound you do have to be on your toes and pay attention more than other types of transportation, they don't really try to make things easy or simple for you. But there are some basic ways to make sure things go right.

If you have a small piece of luggage, take it up with you. If its big you have to have it checked and tagged at the service desk before you leave, you might have to wait in line for this so allow time for that. You hand it to the luggage guy before you board. At the end of the trip, or when you transfer, they just chuck it on the ground with everyone else's, so make sure you grab it and not someone else. You then have to make sure it transfers to to the next bus- they don't do this for you.

As for transfer, just make sure you know when the next bus is leaving and what gate number its leaving from- the previous driver may tell you, it may be posted over the gate or on a TV screen, or you can just ask other people standing in line or the people at the service desk. Whenever in doubt, ask someone. Get in the line at the gate unless you want the last pick of seats.

Also bring your own food, because the depot stuff is overpriced and lousy, and its often not easy to get it anywhere else except at the McDonalds they sometimes stop at. And bring a small pillow.

My first advice would be to call to Amrtrak. Derelicts and bums ride Greyhound.

The bus driver collects tickets before you board the bus, so it would be highly unlikely that you'd be able to board the wrong bus. The people who work in the station will be able to help you. Take very little and check it under the bus. But make sure you take a Walkman or an MP3 player, so you can listen to music and it would be more unlikely that strangers would talk to you. Also carry a cell phone, in case you need to call the police.

Take the train, even if it costs a little more. A better class of people ride the train and the conductors regularly walk back and forth down the aisles. Plus the train has a luggage area immediately above you. It will definitely be safer.

The best thing to do is just be prepared. I've never ridden greyhound before, but I have ridden charter type buses from place to place. Assuming that they are mostly similar, what I did to prepare was call in to reserve a seat, made sure of the location, date, and time it was leaving, arrived there 20 minutes ahead of time (just in case), and brought cash and atm card just in case they preferred one over the other. Don't be afraid to ask the driver/overseer questions to make sure you are on the right bus- they are there to help you! And what's more embarrassing- asking for a little help, or driving all the way to some other state and then having to get back?

Bottom line- Don't worry! as long as you are prepared, everything will be fine. it's comparable to flying- have your reservation (ticket), keep your luggage close to you, da da da.. and don't forget to bring something to occupy you on the long trip! Have fun ( :
