O.K. I'm a Baby Boomer writer looking to make references y'all 18-35 might catch. What do you know? (Don't look up answers just to answer! Look 'em up afterwards if you wish, but what I need here is your right-this-second knowing.)
FIRST: Can you name a silent movie (pre-1930) ? Name it / them.
SECOND: Do you recognize any of these names? 1) Rudolph Valentino 2) Lon Chaney 3) Douglas Fairbanks 4) D.W. Griffith 5) Lillian Gish 6) Buster Keaton
THIRD: Can you name another silent movie person?
Thanks for considering! I don't know how I'll hand out the 10-point prize, but your 2-points-worth is much appreciated. Good day!

Metropolis - considered by many as one of the greatest silent movies (or any style of movie)
Birth of A Nation
Great Train Robbery
The Mark of Zorro

Yes I recognize all those names, and most even made a name in "talkies"
Another Silent movie person - Mel Brooks, Dom Deluise, Marty Feldman, Marcel Marceau (the only speaking part in the movie) or someone not in Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" :)
Ok, seriously Mary Pickford
Fay Wray got her start in silent movies

I can not think of a name of any silent movies, but I have seen several. Mostly they are Charlie Chaplin movies, and I know that the first Chaplin Movie to use sound was the one that has the blind girl in it, who thinks that Chaplin is the millionaire.
I recognize all the names in the second part, but can not put faces to most of the names. I think that Douglas Fairbanks played Robin Hood, and Lon Chaney was Frankenstein, but the others I can't seem to place. As for the third, I've already named Charlie Chaplin. Hope this is the kind of answer you were looking for.

Great question and some good answers. You got my star. I am not going to answer because I am from the pre-Baby Boomer generation, so I remember a lot. Though I will add that one of my favorites from the silent era was Tom Mix. I also know why he did not make it into the talkies. My grandfather worked with him in the coal mines in Tennessee before he went to Hollywood. Granddad said he had a very low gravely voice and he was hard to understand. Oh, and my dad went to school with Sydney Toler of Charlie Chan fame.

1. The Phantom of the Operah
2. numbers 1, 4, and 6 are familiar but I couldn't say much about them
3. Chalie Chaplin

I'm not big into silent films but I watch a lot of older talkie classics, probably a lot more than most people in that age range.
