It's a feedback process where a reaction rate increases with temperature *and* the reaction releases its own heat (it's exothermic). If the heat cannot be removed quickly enough, the temperature rises at an exponential rate in time.

It means the rate of reaction is increasing
due to the current rate of reaction.
The result is usually an explosion,
given enough reactant and containment.
