....just another repackaged lefty call for government as the answer for every problem from cradle to grave? .....a bunch of hammers trying to make everything into a nail so that the whole world will be beholden to them? And isn't the recent success of the surge at reducing the violence in Iraq another refutation of their droning repetition, just like every failed totalitarian commie regime is a refutation of their insistence that communism would work if only someone would implement it correctly? Isn't it sad for them that they've staked their credibility on America's failure?

Yes "Virtual" there is always hope for you that things will go bad for America. And yes, you can make any trend look different by altering the time period.

The military solution obviously has worked according to the righties. A political solution is still a long way off. Until we see the Iraqi government stepping up to the plate on their own behalf our efforts have been useless. They should have an ultimatum. Either they get their act together soon or they are on their own. Unfortunately the military industrial complex isn't going to let that happen. Jingoists love the fact that we are still over there. They get all bent out of shape when we remind them that we have been told several times that we have won, mission accomplished etc. If all this was true we would have our people home already. Since our people are still there the danger must still exist. If the danger still exists than one can but wonder how successful we have really been. Are they regrouping and taking a breather until later and then launch a surge of their own?
Attacking a country that was no threat to us is a failed policy from the start. Instead of going full force after those that actually were responsible for attacking our country we go after someone else. What a lame policy.

You seem to be missing the big picture. The American military can keep throwing American servicemen to the wolves in Iraq forever, but unless the Iraqi people and their government fix the colossal damage the Bush administration has caused to their entire social system, there will never be peace- only a failed state.
It was astoundingly quixotic of the President to think he could create a liberal democracy in a country that has a majority of fundamentalist Muslims. An important pillar of democracy is Freedom OF and FROM Religion. Iraq won't move forward until they move away from their theocratic inclination into the modern world.

Nope. It seems to be entirely split by tribes and religious groups. Fratricide wars of all sorts and it will be up to them to decide if and when they stop killing each other and do something positive for a change.
