SPDIF usually transmits in the 5.1 or 7.1 format by default. There may be a setting in your laptop that will enable this output, and what you will need on the receiving end is something that can accept an optical SPDIF connection and has a decoder, such as a home theater receiver. If the digital speaker does not have an input for SPDIF, then buying an optical-to-analog converter can be expensive.

Converting from S/PDIF optical to S/PDIF coaxial is not that expensive, maybe $25 on Amazon.com. However, the only thing that'll turn single 5.1 stream to separate speakers is a Receiver. And that costs an arm and a leg if you want a good one.
