The is no wrong way to dance, only a wrong way to do "dances"
The Waltz
The Polka
and more recent dances like
The Chicken Noodle Soup
The LipGloss
Sounds crazy right? Those are the dances the in crowd is and/or were doing at the moment.
Dance is about self expression. Like physical poetry.
Poetry has a formula to follow and so does dance.
Movement X Self Expression + rhythm = Dancing
Move your body by the amount of self expression you wish to reveal add rhythm and that is dancing
Adding music to the equation is optional but doing so help to quantify ( or give value to ) the expression.
So open up your My Music folder, get out of your chair and make some room. Kick back, let loose and have some fun.

Oooh, my flippant answer would be dad dancing (& you should see my dad dancing haha). In truth, no there isn't a wrong way to dance. There may be dancing that is more appropriate to certain audiences or situations but dance is essentially a joy & life-enhancing, if it feels good....
The second part of your question as to whether I'm any good, guess that would also depend on who's judging - I trained in classical ballet & did my degree in contemporary dance, so someone must have thought I was ok.

There is. The dance that is causing injuries to you or others is wrong. The dance that's offensive to general public is wrong too. I consider myself to be pretty good at dancing.

If you're dancing within a technique, such as ballet, you could be doing it incorrectly. You can still do things that aren't normally seen in ballet, that in class could be considered "wrong," but if it's within choreography, you can pretty much do what you want. Within a technique, dancing the "wrong" way could get you hurt. There's a reason for technique.
Within regular dancing, you can do whatever the hell you'd like!

Any time I went to a club I always offered to watch the bags and drinks so the others could go strut their stuff. It was either that or embarrass myself and being 6ft 1in in bare feet I tend to stick out like a sore thumb so dancing was definitely out!
