A dynamo is a type of electrical generator. Commercial power plants use them. Diesel locomotives and nuclear powered ships and subs use them by converting the primary power source into electricity used to drive electric motors. This avoids the need for large gears and shafts to transfer the power to the wheels/propeller by using electrical cables instead.
