It depends on whether you're talking about desktops or laptops. I personally think Gateway is a great company.
What really matters in computers is not the company that makes them, but the components inside (A computer is really just a bunch of different devices connected together, so you want the best of every type. Gateway does not make each component, and every company generally uses the same or similar brands of components)
The difference between companies is generally most evident in the cases, the bells and whistles, and the software that they package. Under the hood it's all very similar.

All mid and entry level computers are pretty much the same as far as quality goes. They all use the same processors and ram, etc. The best thing to look at when choosing would be features.

nowadays all computers are the same, they all come from china regardless of the brand, i've seen emachines lasting years and dells "going" after a year. it's all about marketing. whatever you buy make sure you get the windows cd or restore cd.
