I have some laptops I am configuring for relatives who will do 99% business work. I need free anti-virus, spyware and firewall - and whatever else I am missing.

I heard AVG and Ad-aware are good, what would be the best configuration?

For configuration of a free Security system for computers I reccomend you use the free Microsoft options to start.

Use the Windows Firewal, and the Windows Defender software program which you can get from the Windows download site. Here is a link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

Now, for this software each system you install it on must pass the Validation process. It is simple, but if one doesn't pass you will need to consider contacting Microsoft and fixing the issue.

Now, for a free Anti-Virus program, the best one I have read about is by AVG.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=t&ie=UTF-8&rls=SUNA,SUNA:2006-50,SUNA:en&q=AVG+free+download

The above link is to a search page filled with links to free AVG. Select one and use it to download and install on the systems which need it.

You don't need multiple Spyware programs, contrary to what some would like to tell us. Windows Defender is perfectly fine program and does more than just zap spyware off of systems, it also ensures that the connections are safe, and that your ports are not being invaded.

Now, Windows XP Firewall is a one way firewall. Which means it only ensures that stuff does not come INTO the system, but it doesn't stop programs from phoning home. Under normal use, this is just fine. I do prefer a two way firewall, but you can hook up a Router to each family members connection, (individual homes) and enable the hardware firewall which comes in most Routers these days. With the hardware and Windows firewalls enabled, the computers will be safe for normal usage.

Windows Vista has a two way firewall. Vista also comes with Windows Defender pre-installed as a Microsoft component. So, for a Vista machine you only need to add the anti-virus application.

Good luck and you are a very good relative to configure all these systems for safety. They are lucky to have you! Have a great holiday season.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

AVG Anti-Virus is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In test,

after test,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0,
after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:
