hey!
so, i have auditions for the music man in a couple of days and ive been preparing for mrs. paroo and marian. but now, i kinda want to be Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, the mayors wife.

the audition song is o columbia, gem of the universe.

the song is super easy. but since the lady is suposed to be crazy and wacko, i obviously need to have some crazy moves to go along with it. like, over exaggerated and obnoxious. and just... wack.

i have been trying to come up with something for the past few days, but i cant. and i cant seem to find anything on youtube. i need help.
please?
someone?
anything at all would be so helpful.
thanks.

I still cant get over today's students being so bent on auditioning for a particular role, or director's allowing it. In my day, directors were trained to cast the best actor in each role from general vocal auditions and readings from the script as called for by the director. Actors are always poor judges of their own abilities and what they are best suited to play.
This role is not crazy & wacko at all, she is a bit eccentric in a way, but that is only with her Delsarte-style "dancing" ( I don't know what else to call it). She is kind of snobby, being the mayor's wife. So you would be better off to just do eggagerated poses while singing the song "straight". But not obnoxious, not crazy or wack.

Eulalie Shinn

The important thing to remember about Eulalie Mackecknie-Shinn is that she doesn't think she's crazy or wacko. She exaggerates the things she knows politicians say. Everything is tempus fugit (time flies). She does the greek dances truly believing her movements to be gracious and lovely. She wants more than anything to be the most important woman in River City, but she is in competition with Marian Peroo! She incites the other women to call into question the books at the library. Of course, the works of Rabelais, Chaucer and Balzak are classics and they should never be banned.

My advice to you, therefore, is to stand straight and tall, sing with all the gusto you can and then start to walk in a circle toward the end, tripping over your own feet and nearly falling down. She is a well meaning lady but she is not as sophisticated as she would like others to believe she is. She should try to complinent her husband the mayor, but she isn't very good at it. She is horrified by the way her daughter acts in public (she always says, "Ye gods!"). In short, this is a very funny character who takes everything she does seriously but messes up and tries not to show it. Have fun with the part - it looks like fun and the audience couild love your portrayal. Break a leg! Rob R
