I just thought of this...I am 35 yrs old and i have a 9 yr old daughter and a 21 month old son. Me and my boyfriend of almost 5 years live together and the 21 month old is both of ours but i still consider myself a single mother since i am not married and i care for the children 98 percent of the time. what do you think?

I don't want to label you or define your life... you're happy with the guy of your choice, and your kids are getting what they need: being brought up by a loving man and woman :)

Yes you are single. As far a your detail? I like the excuse of waiting till he pays off his bills before you will marry him. I just wonder how many more kids later when this will happen.

Additional detail...You have lived with this guy for 5 years. Unless your living a relationship 50/50 being paid on bills, children, food and housing. I would say yes, if not and he is paying the bigger half of all bill, how do you expect him to pay his dept?

Sexy Mama were I live you and your boyfriend would be considered as a married common law couple if you two are living together. Such if anything happened and this relationship was to end then the assets would be equally divided. But waiting for debts to be paid off is a smart idea providing he is good at paying them and not continuing to get into debt further. My wife and I wanted to do just as you two have decided but we ended up marring in May of this year and I still had plenty of debts (as did she). Love conquers money in my opinion and as such why wait if you two are truly in love and mature. Best of luck.

Technically, you are not married, so single. But, sounds like you are in a committed relationship with one of the children's father, so, not really single, maybe dating him, living together, not really single unless you are dating others and he is a roommate. So, I understand why you are confused, lol. Is he a contributing factor in your household financially? If so, I think, you are not a "single" mom, you have support and are in a relationship. And, most of us, married or single, take care of the kids 98 percent of the time:D Hope that helps, it is sticky sometimes...

Yes you are a considered a single mother. But why is an actual label so important?

Well, legally, I guess you would be considered single (since you're not married). However, you have a boyfriend and a child with him, so wouldn't you really be considered taken?

I think you should not be paying off his debts. Bad move. Watch some Judge Judy if you want to see how this ends up...

if you are not married you are considered single, and if you are a mother at the same time you are a single mother.
