Movable type- The printing press is the basis of all our current exponential growth in knowledge. Without it, information transfer would still be word of mouth and illegible scrip- Even our paperless virtual world would not exist, as the technology required to create the computer never would have been accumlated in a usable format. Long live the printing press and movable type!

Agriculture.

If you need a more tangible invention, then the sickle and the plow.

Before the invention—or depending on how you look at it, the discovery—of agriculture, humans lived in small hunting and gathering bands that made yearly rounds. They would live in one area for a few months, exploit those resources, then move on to another area and do the same thing. They would live in a few different areas a year, and return to those same places around the same time every year. When they discovered that they could continually grow certain foods in an area, they eventually became more stationary. The effects of agriculture are far-reaching. Because of this, towns began to flourish, people began to specialize in different trades, government developed, religion became more organized, and so on.

The personal computer and the Internet that followed.

We now have most of the worlds knowledge at our fingertips and can communicate with others all around the world instantly. It allows the free movement of ideas and creations to help up grow and learn.

Unfortunately it is also the worst thing that has been invented as it allows pedophiles much greater access to children. It also has created the largest porn industry ever and it also make scamming others out of money so much easier.
