I want to start a petition for the library..I want to be able to go on xanga and myspace without getting abandoned from the computer for 30 days..Librarians here are so mean and I was listening to music and writing on my xanga (before I knew that it wasn't allowed) and the librarians all you're typing way too fast to be listening to music..And she threatned to kick my brother and me out for him asking me a question. Any ideas how to start this thing? How to do it? I'll take anything..Also, does your library allow myspace/xanga/chatting?

It's a regular library..not a school library.

As a librarian - can I give you some advice?
first - make sure you read the library's policy about using the computers and the internet - you must know about the library before you can change it.

second - start by writing a respectful letter to the board of the library. This group is in charge of running the library for the community. Let them know that you would like to be able to get on Xanga and why. Tell them in the importance of xanga to you and your friends.
Ask them to contact you when they have made a decision and offer to come to their meeting and answer questions (again respectfully) about why you and your friends think that the library should let you use Xanga. If the library has a teen librarian or someone who works with teens, talk to them, get them to understand you point of view.

IF that does not work - write a letter to the editor of your newspaper with the same information. Remind them paper that the library is there for the community and should be listening to the needs of the community.

If that does not work - go to a petition, get your friends who use the library to sign it, maybe your high school librarian or other adults who work with teens and understand the importance of teen social sites.

My library does allow Xanga, myspace and facebook, however I know many libraries that do not - more because of the problems that they have had with the people using those sites acting out in the library than because of the sites themselves. . .
Good luck,

The way to start the petition would be to get permission from your librarian to type a petition on the library computer and then post it on Xanga and My Space.

They wont care about a petition. I also dont think myspace/xanga etc. should be aloud in a library. Your brother can whisper you a question, but has to be quite. Its a library, you have to be quite.

But either way, I promise they will just laugh at you if you came to them with a petition, a library isnt a democracy.

It's the library's computer, so the library gets to determine its terms of use. Petitioning won't do anything, unless you're petitioning to have all computers removed.

I also get the impression that you are not telling the full story. I strongly doubt he said, "I'll kick you out if you ask a question."

Public library or school library? If you are talking school library, then get over it. You should be worrying about school work anyway.

Since it's a regular library, maybe you should think of getting interent at home. You have to follow the rules of the library...even if you don't agree with them....and you did agree to abide by the rules when you got a library card.

Most of the libraries I've been to don't allow Myspace because it had a tendancy to make the computers belly up.

Aaaaand... Verbal chatting is usually not very widely acceptable in a library, but some allow IM'ing and stuff.

Typing too fast? you've honestly got to be kidding me. are you supposed to put cotton balls on your fingers and do chickenpeck typing so you won't make a sound?

my library lets you do whatever you want. as long as youre not disturbing anyone else. disturbing others is serious no no in any library. but ask your librarian if you're not allowed to be on a site, why is it not blocked? get a list of rules from your library before logging on. also, maybe your music was too loud.

if it's a school library, you're out of luck. also, unless you have some REALLY good reason, chances are that other libraries won't allow it either. it just sounds like you're whining here. if you offer an example of your arguments, we'd be able to give you better advice of how to go about this.
