You must NOT connect this to a phone line. It needs to connect to a LAN port on a router or switch, for this you must subscribe to broadband. The phone voltages go up to 90v, this is enough to totally destroy a poorly protected lan connection, as these are only designed to stand about 5v.

You must have an Internet Service. If you have DSL service from a Telephone Company yoiu terminate the phone line with a DSL Modem which is usually provided by the Telephone Company. The DSL Modem has an Ethernet port on it that you connect to your pc with a Cat 5 patch cable.

Now the telephone company's hand off can be a standard RJ 11 phone jack. However this plugs into the Modem, not the pc. The Ethernet cable, an RJ 45 style, goes from Modem to PC.

If you wish more than 1 pc to be connected you connect the modem Ethernet port to a router WAN port. The router LAN port goes to a network switch and pcs connect to the network switch as well. If you have a modem and switch combined in a single unit (usually a max of 4 LAN ports) you may not need the switch.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

There is a 75 volt ringer voltage on the phone line. The first time that line rings, the NIC blows up, and maybe your motherboard with it.

Dialup and modems are way too slow for gaming. You must have a broadband connection to do online gaming.
