It almost forms like diagnal horizontal lines. Sometimes after it does this.. the computer will even restart its self. Sometimes it wont even start up after this happens.. the screen will remain black and my fan wont come on even though I get my power light - no beeping. It's about 2 years old and has been doing this for a few weeks. It's not the monitor as it does the same when I swap it. The video card is part of the mother board. It doesn't seem to do it during any particular event-completely random. I'm on xp if that matters at all.

Try running in the safe mode by repeatedly pressing the [F8] key during the startup process. This will use the lowest graphic settings so the screen won't look right, but doing so might help answer some questions.

If safe mode runs fine for a long time, then I'd suggest that the problem lies with your graphics driver. In that case, update the driver.

If the problem still exists, then it might be a power supply issue. The power supply may run erratic if it overheats.

Make sure all cooling fans are running properly. The problem may only occur when a component overheats, this may explain the erratic operation.
