If you go to www.Download.com, you will have many choices. Once you get on the website, off to the right, you will see some of the most downloaded software. In the list, you should see AVG for anti-virus and Adware 2007 for anti-spyware. You will need to down load them both and get the latest updates-both are free. If you cannot see the list, you can type in the names into the search engine. There are others, but those two are the most popular and pain free in down loading and already proven to be effective-the price is also right.

Comodo is very good, it has all the usual scan options , anti virus , spyware, adware, and a very good firewall, all in all, it's a good option, especially as it's free.If you want to go the one application for one purpose route, then AVG is good for anti virus purposes, and you can do worse than download Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware and Ad aware for , as the name suggests AD ware! Whatever you do DO NOT rely on the built in Windows firewall , it is, at best useless!

You've got lots of advice with the other answers,
BUT...
Why not do a search yourself for Anti Virus, Free Bug Removal or whatever, since you have to download them anyway, you'll learn how to do a proper search. You will learn a lot re: searching, trying stuff out AND it'll save you a lot of time in the future.
JUST AN IDEA!

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!
AVG Anti-Virus is crap!
Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
In test,

after test,

after test,

after test ,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0,
after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.
AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/
and Avast:
