Everyone I know gets their trees the weekend after Thanksgiving and their's stays alive through Christmas. Ours usually dies or loses it's green early. Is there a certain tree that lasts longer? We have the tree stand that requires a hole be drilled in the bottom of the tree trunk and we have them drill the hole at the tree farm so it will be centered. If we could somehow keep the drilled out area wet on our trip back home, would that help? Our home is about a 30 minute drive from the farm and of course we have to get into the house with the tree. I would say it's usually in water within an hour of being cut. Any real and helpful advice would be appreciated. Please don't even try to help me if you haven't ever had a "live" Christmas tree.
TIA!

We cut our tree every year..I have found it helps to be sure we are starting out with a tree that isn't to dry. We see if to many needles come off with our hands even before we cut. When we haven't had a lot of rain during the summer the trees are dryer in the winter. Look for a very green tree too.
If in doubt look for packets of the fertilizer you would put into flowers to keep them fresh longer, they also work on the trees.
One year When I got a tree from a tree-lot,I didn't re cut the bottom and by Christmas day all the needles had literally fallen off, When you get home from a 30 minute drive, and get everything ready to set up the tree, its been to long and the tree sap starts doing its thing so re-cut the bottom before you drill your holes..

Here is one link I found: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/trees/treecare.html

But there was a corn syrup recipe we used last year that worked really well... am having trouble finding it again, but will post it as soon as I find it...

Here's another link, but I still can't find the corn syrup mixture... http://www.gilroydispatch.com/lifestyles/contentview.asp?c=174191

well u know that if ur going to buy a live christmas tree that ur suppose to buy it somewhere in december, right? cuz it will die if you keep it that long and its not used for christmas yet.

all you can do now is water it everyday.
