Black Friday is probably the best. (day after turkey day) or the day after Christmas. Best deals are usually online. As for Dell or HP it is different from machine to machine you need to do a little research. Most machines are getting easier to upgrade these days but occasionaly propreitary parts are still used.
Dell for example has been known to use propreitary powersupplies in the past so you have to come to them for parts, buy a psu or mobo from somewhere else plug it in and poof!
Also if you cant decide try calling tech support and see how long it takes you to get to a real person and can you understand their accent (dell moved their tech suppodt to Calcutta India). I would say Asus or HP myself.

P.S. and to Ironsharpener? What used to cost thousands 20 years ago cannot be bought today (or is in a museum) and while you can make the case that the cost of an AVERAGE computer has come down some, to say that the cost of computers is not rising because most ppl have one is false.

The high end has just gotten more exclusive is all and in some cases even more expensive. Top of the line processors, like the new Intel Xeon costs over two thousand dollars,

Which is more than they did decades ago... and this years MaximumPC dream machine cost almost $12,000 which is more than i ever remeber computers costing in the past.

While the cost of older parts or midrange parts is going down the price of new high end stuff is in fact going up or maintaining its premium cost. Clearly you're not thinking it through very well.

Oh and Pentium 6 doesn't exist.... neither does the pentium 5 the # convention stopped at Pentium4. Stop mis-informing people with your ignorance.

Definitely after Christmas.

Because of the nature of "computer technology" what used to cost thousands and thousands of dollars 20 years ago now only costs hundreds. The cost of computers is NOT rising, because most people already have one. They're NOT in demand anymore where companies can mark the prices up. Maybe for a PC that has the latest technology where the processor speed is awesome, like a Pentium 6, or where a huge software package is being is offered as part of the deal.

What I mean is they are as popular as ever, but computers are no longer a rare item to have where you have to spend A LOT of $$ to have one. It all depends on your PERSONAL needs and what your going to be using it for. You're safe with (HP) or (Dell), but there are many good manufacturers of computers now. I would do my OWN internet searching.

Ironically, the BEST deals for a (PC) will be ON THE INTERNET and again the cost of computers is only getting cheaper as you wait. FIND YOUR DEAL!!! (LOL)

Sales before Christmas now are pretty much the same as after. Think the only really best after Christmas is the door crashers at some places but, you need to be first in line.

After christmas of course,
you will find more models available and they will be cheaper.
Try end of January.

All desktop computers can be upgraded easily.
And laptops can be too.

Asus is probably the best brand for both.

Actually the best time to buy a computer is the fall. That is when computers are the cheapest. As much as i hate to say it, go to dell if you want to get a customized computer cheap.

The best day would have been Black Friday. But since you obviously missed that...then probably before christmas. They will still have sales.

purchasing a comp. doesn't depend on time, it depends on the processor u r purchasing.
if it is launched within a month or two, u can wait for 2 or3 more months so it will cost u around two third of its launched price.
if u can wait till march then u can have intel core2 extreme will cost around 20000/-
if it is urgent in dec. then it will around 27000/-
do not go behind offers.
they will have their money by some other way.
