He had the potential to be, but failed to become what he could have been. He was a fiery revolutionary, who had no real clue what to do with the power, once he attained it, and Cuba suffered the consequences for that over the past 50 years. Had he chosen to make Cuba a Socialist Democracy , instead of a communist dictatorship, the future of Cuba could have been a shining star, but he choose to maintain personal power rather liberate the people and hold elections. So, bottom line. No, not a great leader at all, and a usurper of Cuba welfare.

I really don't think he is a good or great man, but if he is the devil likes the US says why has this man out lasted so many presidents.I have been to Cuba many times and the people that I have met are educated and nice but I believe they were hiding something. Hey, what do I know I am just a sun burnt tourist to them.

With Castro and his system you're not allowed to think.
Did you watch C-Span's report on Cuba?
There you get along by going along with Castro.
If a person doesn't think he is a great man they are sent to a political camp to get their thinking set straight.
Since he controls the guns he controls the people.
If the people had free elections would he stand a chance of being elected by the people??
Cubans love their country and would probably return there if he wasn't there.
People vote with their feet by going to countries that offer freedom and opportunity.

No, I don't feel Fidel Castro is a great man. Since he rose to power the Cuban people have lived under communism and oppression.

I agree with The Wise One on this.He must have known the possible reprecussions by allowing Russia to put missiles on Cuba.Watch Kevin Costnors film 13 days, and you will see how close it was.If he had been a great leader he would have looked at the bigger picture and said no.

Fidel, being a Marxist, would agree that there are no such things as great men. We are all products of our environment.

As in the words of Ollivander in Harry Potter "He did Great things, terrible things, but great".

The goodness or badness of someones actions does not define how Great they were.

His coral reefs are doing great and so is the fishing industry due to quotas enforced by Fidel .

They do not have dozens of inefficient coal plants spewing toxic waste into the air .

Just take a clear picture of Cuba under Fidel and tell me he is any worse then Bush .

Killing is killing no matter the cause .

Murdering thug, heartless dictator, cruel fetishes, militaristic monster. Was Hitler a great man because he unified Germany!? Why all this left wing worship of Fidel? The man is a pig.

Just read your added comments. You are either a communist propaganda lover or an idiot. No other choices here. Fidel doesn't "love" his people. He rules them. He kills them. He threatens them, but he does NOT love them.
