when i turn it on it comes on fine, but then a message box comes on saying something like 'windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'. Sometimes, but rarely, it then just goes fine. But usually when i click on, say, internet explorer, a message comes up saying 'internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'. Same thing happens with windows media player and other stuff, and i cant get on them. Then sometimes the comp freezes. Its been doing this for a few days now. I tried system restore but its still the same. What can i do?

Download and run CCleaner.

Start using Mozilla Firefox instead of IE it's way more reliable and you will get no more error messages you can have both at the same time in case MF should start going slow which it dose but rarely you can use IE.

Good Luck.

I don't think this is a virus or spyware because I can't think of one that affects all these programs. It doesn't seem like a corruption in the registry unless it was the registration of a dll but again can't think of one that affects these programs. In the time between your PC working OK and it going wrong did you install a new program ? I think that either a program has changed some DLLs or they have become corrupted. I would suggest that if you are using XP and you have the original CD you should try a repair. If that doesn't work then you are going to have to re-install the OS

Either you need to somehow get a registry cleaner, or reinstall windows using the full cd's, o or the restore disks that came with your PC. One system optimizer I find particularly good is System Mechanic, there is a free trial, and a full version. The trial has a registry cleaner I believe, but I dumped my PC for a mac. Life is much easier.

I agree with one of your respondents that Mozilla Firefox is better than Internet Explorer for browsing. I have had few problems since switching. It is easy to download is free and has all the components you need.

The sure way to fix this is to reload your operating system. I recommend you use a good quality operating system that is NOT Microsoft, such as www.kubuntu.org

Run defrag. It is easy and fixes a lot of problems. It is worth a try.
