I don't think there is a way, that is how you know you are a part of the network. The only suggestion is to change your IP address. when you are online. If it is static in the first place. Not sure what to do if it is dynamic.

I presume this is a peer to peer LAN. I further presume this is XP Pro, Win 2000 Pro or a Vista Business operating system, given there are 10 pcs.

You will be able to see all the other pcs on the LAN but if the file directories on your pc are NOT set to enable network sharing, others cannot access or even see your folders (directories).

Put simply, no. Unless your running a Network Operating System somewhere in your LAN with Active Directory (or equivalent) running.
When connected to the LAN, your are connected with a group of computers. The idea is connectivity. If you unplug your computer, nobody will see you anymore

computers do that. my home wireless network does the same thing. i do not think there is a way. as for turning off you file sharing, i would check with your boss. if you are in a company, he might let you do that becuz others may need access to your files.

You don't mention the operating system, but if you turn off file sharing that should do it.
