On Monday, July 24th, 1933, POPEYE receives an express package in his mail. Rather than do the logical thing and open it, he and Wimpy speculate about what it could possibly contain. When strange sounds come from inside the box, Popeye suspects an old enemy has sent him a wild animal which will, in his own words, "..Jump out an' tear me neck off." Later, the box makes rattling noises and the two friends become convinced it holds a poisonous snake. Just as Popeye and Wimpy are preparing to fire a gun at the box to kill the deadly creature within, Popeye reconsiders. He decides to open the box, despite the risks. On Friday, July 28th he discovers to his delight that the package contains a baby boy, complete with toy rattle and a note from the mother requesting that the sailor protect and care for her son. Popeye immediately claims the boy as his own saying that the mother, "..gived the kid to me an' he's mine to keep." He spends the next several days learning the ins and outs of child rearing. He buys 3,650 pairs of baby underwear; enough to last a year at ten pair a day, and then can't figure out how to put them on. He attends a child-rearing seminar for mothers only, disguised as a woman. The ultimate problem, however, appears to be choosing a name for the infant.

On August 5th, Popeye comments to Wimpy, "The big question now is, what'll we name the baby?" Wimpy suggests they name him after a president and lists several, but Popeye refuses, saying, "when this kid grows up I wants a new name in the White House." Wimpy next suggests 'Honeysuckle' and is wisely ignored.

On August 17, 1933, Popeye tells Wimpy that he's finally reached a decision on a name. Wimpy suggests they christen the baby with a bottle of soda pop, since they have no champagne. Popeye replies, "Ya crazy lumatic, ya mus' be goofy. I yam go'ner christen him with a big pot of spinach."

As Popeye pours a large container of soggy vegetables over the boy's head, he announces, "I do hereby christen ya by the names of 'SCOONER Seawell Georgia Washenting, Christiffer Columbia, Daniel Boom'". Wimpy adds, "May his name be among the heroes of the twentieth century."

Are you confused now? Did you actually think we were talking about Swee'pea? Well, if you did, you're right. When Swee'pea first appeared in the Thimble Theatre, his official name was Scooner.

But why did Scooner become Swee'pea? It's likely that no one will ever know for sure, and it may have been completely unintentional. In Popeye's early strip appearances, he often used the term, "Lay among the swee'peas" as a metaphor for death or disablement. He later used it to describe Olive Oyl, often calling her his little swee'pea. When Scooner came along, the label was transferred to him and never again used in connection with Olive. Over time, when discussing Scooner, Popeye would mention, "my little swee'pea," then, "little swee'pea" and finally just Swee'pea. Through common usage, the descriptive term for Scooner eventually came to actually displace his proper name. And just when, if ever, it became Swee'pea's official title is open to debate. A logical assumption would be the day on which Segar began to capitalize 'the first letter, indicating a proper title. But since Segar used all capital letters in his dialogue balloons, this method is useless. About the closest it can be narrowed down is by mentioning that Popeye first calls Scooner "Popeye's little swee'pea" on July 29, 1933, the day after opening the crate. He first refers to him as simply "Swee'pea" on August 14. And the last time Swee'pea would ever be referred to as Scooner would be February 6, 1934. So somewhere in that seven month period is where Scooner became Swee'pea. To try and pinpoint it any closer than that would be blatant speculation.

Popeye's nephews were Poopeye, Peepeye and Pipeye.
